In the longstanding tradition of mystical Jews and lifestyle publications, we bring you New Moon Readings. They aren’t fortune telling or magic, and they’re not about luck or a mysterious power. They draw upon on the wise monthly themes of the Hebrew calendar, the influence of the solar system on our daily lives, and, sometimes, totally pagan prognostication tools (tarot!) to guide us.
Kislev, the darkest month of the year, is associated by the Kabbalists with trust – nurturing our confidence when wandering the dark, that our hearts may illuminate a vision of what is to come. This month also contains within it the holiday of Chanukah, which directs us toward the wisdom of all forms of light.
As the days get shorter and the nights grow longer, the emotional depths cultivated over the past 2 moons act as our guide during the next step of the journey – through the layers of the self, toward the true inner light from which all knowing shines forth.
As the Sagittarian archer who trusts her heart-point and aims her fiery arrow with courage, we strive to illuminate our path with intuitive wisdom and disarm all that blocks our way.
Chanukah Mindfulness Exercise
For each of the 8 nights that the menorah is lit on Chanukah, take a moment to pause and reflect on this year and all that transpired. Recall something that brought you closer to your inner-knowing and most authentic self. Offer gratitude for this “something” each night, building on the miracle of the last, in service of illuminating your path.
