Adar 5777

New Moon Reading

In the longstanding tradition of mystical Jews and lifestyle publications, we bring you New Moon Readings. They aren’t fortune telling or magic, and they’re not about luck or a mysterious power. They draw upon on the wise monthly themes of the Hebrew calendar, the influence of the solar system on our daily lives, and, sometimes, totally pagan prognostication tools (tarot!) to guide us.

Adar is the 12th and last month of the Hebrew calendar. According to the Kabbalah, this moon is associated with metamorphosis and ecstatic joy. The 15th day of Adar marks the festival of Purim, a celebration of masks, hidden identities, and altered states of consciousness.

As the final moon of the year, Adar becomes a reflection point and gathering place for all the moons and experiences over the past twelve months. An auspicious time to pause, to celebrate, to bring laughter to the winds of change and to be in the fluidity of metamorphosis as it relates to our identities. Try on a mask or two. Express your deepest joy, anger, or whatever calls your spirit. Be playful and let go!

Soon the first moon of the next lunar year, Nisan, will light our night sky and liberate those who dare to free themselves from outside expectation and story. It is your time to be true; don’t shy away from leaving any precious parts behind, however hidden or strange. We need you, dear friends, all of you.
